A Diwali with the politicos
Update: Pictured with Ashish and his son is Mini Timmaraju, District Director for Congressman Nick Lampson. Ashish's wife
Sameera was busy being hostess so I didn't get a photo.
A quaint Houston home was turned into Diwali central this weekend, and there was a little lobbying in the mix too. For those unfamiliar, Diwali is the Fest of Lights, celebrated by
about a billion people around the world. This event was hosted by Ashish Mahendru and his lovely wife. Mahendru, it just happens-- is running for District Judge. Though most City Council candidates were out doing last minute campaigning, the lone Indian
candidate, Manisha Mehta, did make an appearance. She's in a tough fight with Mike Sullivan, William Williams, and Annette Dwyer to replace Addie Wiseman. Also in the mix, Charles Kuffner, who lives in the neighborhood. Seriously, the real stars of the event were the fab Indian food and the live music. Besides a good share of political gossip, I learned more thing: when going to Starbucks, do not order Chai Tea. Chai IS tea, so it's redundant. Just order Chai!

Or "cha" in Mandarin Chinese, right?
Wo yao he cha.
