Politicos helping a hero (or at least showing up)
Anyone who's ever tried to get a bunch of politicians to show up at an event knows that it can be challenging.
(Unless it's election season.) However, organizers of the Helping a Hero literally had the politicians beating a path to the event's door. That's because Sunday night's event saw 15 service members who were wounded in war get much needed homes. The young men and women each had amazing stories to tell, and the organization selected the ones who are receiving homes.
For the politicos, each hosted the veteran who was receiving a home at their table. It's one of the few events around that Democrats, Republicans, and everyone in between gladly took part in.. no obvious party bickering. Most of the Houston area Congressional delegation was present, including Rep. Al Green, Sheila Jackson-Lee, John Culberson, Gene Green, and Nick Lampson. State Sen. Tommy Williams is pictured with the family who received a home, and Rep.
Lampson is pictured with the veteran who sat at his table. State Sen. Dan Patrick showed up, and Council Member Toni Lawrence was also present. Lawrence is pictured with Charles Bacarisse, who turned his back to my camera, declaring
with a smile: "I'm done with politics!"
Mayor Bill White and Mrs. White gave away the first home of the night. We didn't see either of the State's Senators, but staffers were present. Neil and Maria Bush also showed up, and well as a few social bold names. But the stars of the night, as they should
be, were the men and women in uniform.
Congrats on their new homes!
