« No Council, but will Consult | Main | Bill White Announces for Senate on the Internet »

December 15, 2008

White's Senate Plan: First seek supporters

If the leading Democrats in Harris County got their way, Bill White would run for Governor.  But, in politics, as is in life, one rarely gets what one wants.

Such was the case today, as a number of local Dems spoke up publicly about what they want White to do, and what they believe he will do.

"I had thought that because of the background he had, and the preference he had with the administrativeBill-white role, that hewas going to run for Governor," said Gerry Birnberg, the Harris Co. Democratic Party Chair.  "You asked me if I was excited he was going to be running , or bummed out he wasn't running for Governor and I said yes to both of them."

Texas Congressman Gene Green, who first met White in the 1970s, said that White probably chose the Senate seat because Hutchison could be a force in the Gubernatorial race.

"You have a Republican Governor who has not done a good job. Then, you have a Republican Senator who's done a real good job in the Senate, and it could be difficult in the general election," said Rep. Green.  "That's when he began looking into the Senate (race.)"

State Sen. Rodney Ellis, who knows just a little bit about everything, was more ellusive.  "Obviously if one asks me about my self interest," he said.  "I'd like to see him run for governor, but to be honest with you, there are some exciting things going on in the National level."

Right. Yea. Everyone's being supportive.  Now announce already! There is some behind the scenes back and forth over the timing of the announcement.  White was suppose to announce last week, but the tragic shooting of a Houston police officer put politics on the back burner.  Today, Mayor White went to Ft. Worth to meet with potential supporters.  He apparently brought along his financial guru, Herb Butrum.  Tomorrow, he will be present for a City Council meeting, and then head to the Valley with Carol Alvarado to meet more people.

Rumor is that White doesn't want to overshadow Chris Bell, who is running for State Senate tomorrow.  So, will he announce on Wednesday or Thursday?  His inner circle knows, but they are being coy.  As coy as Butrum and friends can be, which is to basically ignore my calls. sigh!

My question is.

How many terms is a Mayor allowed to be in office? I know its 3 year terms.

But how many of them are allowed?

If it's lest then 6 terms. Then someone needs to look in to The Dickinson City Hall. Because the Mayor has been in office sience 1990 that makes 6 (3yr terms)and also some of the Council members. Is this right?

Thank you
