City of Houston gets slapped with Redistricting Lawsuit
We doubt anyone will run off to New Mexico nor Oklahoma this time around, but maybe a trip to Katy? Kidding, of course.
Back to the more serious issue at hand.
The City of Houston, along with all the Council Members and such, have been slapped with a redistricting lawsuit. Vidal Martinez heads up this one. Basically, the lawsuit is aimed at forcing the City of Houston to redistrict NOW, not later. The City Charter allows for the creation of new district council seats when the city's population grows to a certain point. Mayor Bill White has said in the past that he must go with the population calculations of the Census. Since that occurs every decade, he was going to leave the redistricting stuff to the next Mayor.
Not so fast.
Members of Houston's Latino community have been eager to redistrict, believing the additional two seats will yield Hispanic opportunity seats. They want court relief so that candidates can be fielded for this upcoming November ballot, and they don't want to wait. You can read the entire lawsuit here. Download Lawsuit .
