Council candidate fails to file in time, left off ballot
As one of the first people to declare her candidacy to replace Adrian Garcia in the District H City Council seat, Karen Derr seemed to have lined up all her ducks in a row.
Until today.
The Realtor and potential candidate apparently forgot to file her papers with the City Secretary by yesterday's deadline.
Oops.
Officially filing the paperwork in candidacy 101. Derr had done everything else by the book. She started a website (which was just taken down), appointed her husband treasurer, and had a high name ID thanks to her real estate business. The City Secretary's list does not show Derr, and that is a major break for Maverick Welsh, the former Chief of Staff for Council Member Peter Brown.
Although several Latinos are in the race, politicos believe that Ed Gonzalez, who has the support of current Sheriff Adrian Garcia, will come out on top. Among Anglo candidates, Derr was seen as the front runner. Her paperwork mistake is a major boon for Welsh, who is also a Heights resident and active in his community.
The top two vote getters in the May special election will then head to a run off.

Karen should have until 5:00 pm tomorrow to file as a write-in candidate. The write-in deadline is normally 48 hours after the regular deadline.
It's not over for her yet.

I will write her in as "Karen DUH"

I wouldn't want her representing my District!

Glad I have an Ed Gonzales sign in my front yard, I hate having a candidate be an embarrassment. Crow is not so tasty. It is often hard to know who will be attentive to needs of the district and respond quickly and efficiently. Glad to know now and not later.

You know what the real sad thing is? Not that DUHerr forgot to file, but that James Partsch-Galvan didn't. GALVANIZE!!!
