A plethora of candidates, aiming for support..
No, it wasn't election day, but if you made your way to the popular Washington Ave. establishment Pearl Bar yesterday, you would have been plastered with handouts, stickers, and buttons from just about every local person running for office.
Local organization Houston Votes teamed up with Texans Together to put together this candidate meet and great, and boy, the candidates came out.
You could literally bounce from Gene Locke, to Peter Brown, and then chat with Annise Parker all within the confines of four bar tables.
Billed as non-partisan, Dems and Repubs showed up. It was interesting to chat with some of the less well known candidades, as some will no doubt go further than others. I found it interesting that I chatted with candidates who are running against Sue Lovell and Mike Sullivan: Incumbants! In a city where term limits of six years mean most sitting council members don't get serious challengers, so they have their work cut out for them.
Other candidates in the mix included CO Bradford, the former Police Chief, Jeff Downing, one of the candidates for Toni Lawrence's position, several of the candidates from District H (Maverick Welsh and Ed Gonzalez), County Attorney Vince Ryan, and a few others that escaped my mind right now.
As far as the flyers go, Maverick Welsh had the longest, while Wayne Garrision (the challenger to Mike Sullivan) had the most pages. I found Ed Gonzalez's flyer a little confusing because there was not a giant image of him smiling, it was just a few small photos. You could barely see his face. Look for these flyers on your door knobs now, if not already.
